The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear

Hadith 6 of 42 Narrated by al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr al-Bukhārī & Muslim

Inna l-ḥalāla bayyinun wa-inna l-ḥarāma bayyin, wa-baynahumā umūrun mushtabihātun lā yaʿlamuhunna kathīrun mina n-nās. Fa-mani ttaqā sh-shubuhāti fa-qadi stabraʾa li-dīnihi wa-ʿirḍih, wa-man waqaʿa fī sh-shubuhāti waqaʿa fī l-ḥarām, ka-r-rāʿī yarʿā ḥawla l-ḥimā yūshiku an yartaʿa fīh.

“The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between the two are matters that resemble one another, which many people do not know.

Whoever guards against these doubtful matters has protected his religion and his honour; and whoever falls into them falls into the unlawful — like a shepherd grazing at the edge of a preserve, on the point of grazing inside it.

Take note: every king has a preserve, and God’s preserve is what He has forbidden.

Take note: in the body there is a morsel of flesh — if it is sound, the whole body is sound; and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Take note: it is the heart.”
