Ayyuhā al-Walad

Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī · d. 505 AH Foundation Planned

A letter al-Ghazālī wrote to a student who asked what all his learning had been for. A few pages, and the standard answer in this tradition to the question of why knowledge without practice is a burden.

The text

Public domain, no copy we can vouch for yet

Al-Ghazālī died in 505 AH and the epistle is public domain, but every full copy we found online is a modern edition. We are still looking for one we can stand behind.

Where it is sold

In English — ours

Not yet. We translate rather than reprint, so the English for this book begins the day its first lesson is taught.

We link rather than mirror. The classical texts are out of copyright, but the modern printed editions of them are not, so we point you at a library that already carries one instead of putting somebody else’s edition on our server. What we do host is our own work.

Lessons

Not written yet. This book is on the map so you can see where it sits in the course, not because it is ready to study here.
